Hip hip hurray! For today is the day we get to go HOME! Tommy's hematology came to visit about 8 AM and said Tommy's doing pretty good and all his counts continue to go in the right direction, so he's going to let us out early (this afternoon) and we'll come back on Monday for another blood check. Tommy's still not "great" so we'll be going home with his G-CSF shots that Daryl or I give him daily (granulocyte-colony stimulating factor) a growth factor that stimulates the bone marrow to make more white blood cells. We'll also be keeping him on the steroids that he started yesterday.
The steroids are almost an instant effect -- which is good considering how tiny my once Chunky Monkey has shriveled down to. Gee (Kim's mom) told him last night he can have whatever he wants at the DR's house all he has to do is call the nurse's and tell them, and includes ice cream. Well, that was giving the kid the "GOLDEN TICKET" like from Willie Wonka! At 10 PM he wanted to buz the nurse for ice cream -- great! Lucky for me (I say "me" because I would have been the one who would have had to go out in the middle of the night driving around for ice cream other wise), they have little ice cream cups in the freezer here on the floor.
Can you guess what he wanted for breakfast this morning?!!! Oh Gee, this child wanted MORE ice cream! So we got ice cream, pancakes, yogurt and chocolate milk. On a diet like this, I don't think we'll have to worry if the steroids will help pack on the pounds.
In the end, we won't be here as a in-patient for his birthday THANK GOODNESS! We'll still have to come down for a finger prick -- guess that's okay. Hopefully by then we can pull off of the G-CSF shots -- there won't be any disagreement from Tommy we know that!

GOING HOME!!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhh, aren't those the greatest words to hear!!!!! So glad that you were able to sleep in your own beds last night!!! I was specifically praying that Tommy would be able to wake up in his own bed on his birthday. Yeah, it looks like the prayers are being answered. 4 years old and great cause to celebrate. I hope you all have a wonderful day tomorrow celebrating that little hero of yours. Don't worry about the weight, it will come and he will be back to his normal self in no time. Believe me, I know!!!! It's funny because when Connor was in the hospital we prayed and prayed that he would gain weight because he hovered at 6 pounds for nearly 4 months. Then when he finally started gaining, he didn't stop. Then the doctor told me that for his age and height he was actually classified as overweight. Then we just had his 18 month appt. and he is absolutely normal with his weight and believe you me, it is easier carrying him around thinner, rather than plump. Just a bit of perspective for you and your journey. Tommy WILL gain back his proper weight and you won't have to worry or be sad any more. Have a super duper birthday Tommy and know that we're all thinking about you and praying for you every day!!!!

Hi there little Tommy,
Looking forward to some pics with Gee and Papa so I can add them to myspace.
I baby sat for Crystal last night and when the boys said their prayers they said "God Bless Tommy"
I just had to cry to know that these two little boys are totally aware that you are putting up a big fight and they asked if you were all better. God Bless our CHILDREN. God Bless YOU little Tommy!
Love
Aunt Terry
